About Hús dagsins
Hús dagsins is a map of the houses in Akureyri whose stories Arnór Bliki Hallmundsson has told in his posts — one house at a time, with its history, the year it was built, and the people who lived there.
The idea
Each post tells the story of a single house: when it was built, who designed it, and who lived there. The map gathers these houses in one place, so you can wander the town — on screen — and read its story house by house.
Arnór and the posts

The posts are written by Arnór Bliki Hallmundsson, a historian and author who has written about the history of Akureyri for decades. The posts appear regularly on akureyri.net — Hús dagsins. The map always links to his blog on MBL, where every post is kept.
Sources and data
The map is built from the addresses in the posts and from open map data. Main sources:
- arnorbl.blog.is — every post
- OpenStreetMap — map data
- Esri — base map
House coordinates are derived from their addresses. The statistics page shows how much of Akureyri has been mapped, compared against the address registry of Iceland's Housing and Construction Authority (HMS).
October 2026 update: automation and upgrades
- The map now covers all of Arnór's posts up to October 2026. More than a hundred posts were added, about 30 of them on houses that were not on the map before, many in Eyjafjarðarsveit.
- Every link now points to a single source: Arnór's blog on MBL, where all the posts are kept.
- The newest house now shows the date of its post.
- A weekly search checks for new posts automatically and reports when a new one appears.
- Send suggestions and error reports to [email protected].
- The base map now comes from Esri, and the site's software has the latest security updates.
The people behind it
Magnús Smári Smárason is the contact for the project and the person responsible for the website. He designed and built the map as a home for the posts and a way into them — but the story and the writing are always Arnór’s.
Notes, corrections, and questions about the website can be sent to [email protected]. You can read more about Magnús at smarason.is.
